Introduction to the Labyrinth

A Journey to the Centre of the Being

The Labyrinth has been part of human history since ancient times. The two most famous Labyrinths on the planet are the one in Crete and the one in Chartres Cathedral, in France. These Labyrinths have been built upon ancient mathematical formulas and sacred geometrical laws in order to support the reconnection of humanity with its divine nature.

Labyrinths create sacred spaces and are a wonderful tool to assist each human being in the process of opening to their own intuition (inner-teacher), which is one of the three Soul qualities.  In ancient times, humans were constantly looking for a way to reconnect with the Cosmos and most of their architectural projects at that time were built with this hidden aim. The circular shape of the Labyrinth mimicks a spiral as its winding path leads us towards the centre, where everything begins. The spiral is a curved pattern on which everything in Nature is based – from plants to natural systems, including the weather and, for this reason, the slow walk to the centre has the purpose of supporting the purification of the human thinking around our emotional and behavioural processes, in order to bring the individual back to their centre, to a state of inner peace and deep receptivity.

The Labyrinth is a spiritual, cosmological, model endowed with a divine imprint. It is a universal pattern that belongs to the collective unconscious mind and, because of that, our being naturally and unconsciously, recognises it. Through this recognition, it is possible to reconnect with one’s intimate, precious, and forgotten gifts.

“From the symbolic point of view, the labyrinth is a defensive system for the custody of something precious and sacred. The centre, protected by the labyrinth’s structure, is reserved for the initiate, who can only access it after having overcome specific labours. If we translate that into psychological words, this centre is the symbol of our deepest and most concealed inner being.” - Umberto Galimberti

Walking through the Labyrinth brings us back to the number 1; to the unity with everything that is. It strengthens one’s sense of self and deep inner receptivity to the Higher Voice of the Cosmos, in order to make each individual feel supported by the endless process of Life.

In this seminar, we will start a journey of discovery, using the Labyrinth as a meditative and introspective tool, which can offer us the possibility of connecting with our deep inner self, any time we might need to.  We will share its history, structure and meaning; what walking a Labyrinth means, and, in meditation, we will walk the Finger Labyrinth to directly experience the profound meaning of a journey to the centre of our being.

Saint Augustin stated - “Solvitur ambulando” (“It is solved by walking”) meaning that, as we walk, the solution will come by itself.
