“Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment” - Thich Nhat Hanh Meditation is a practice of inner knowledge that gradually trains the mind in presence, concentration and the conscious observation of what takes place within us. The word meditation is connected to the same root as “medicine” and recalls the idea of taking care of oneself, bringing attention back to the centre of one’s being, where listening, balance and direction can be found again. In this first part of the pathway, meditation is introduced as a concrete and daily experience, capable of helping the person recognise thoughts, emotions, automatic reactions and inner movements that often influence the way we live, choose and relate. Through work on mental concentration, breath, silence and attention, the student begins to develop a greater capacity for self-observation, learning to remain present even in moments when external life stimulates dispersion, agitation or loss of centredness. Mindfulness is presented here as the capacity to inhabit the present moment with attention, listening and awareness. Within the educational approach of the International Initiation School, this quality becomes part of a broader work on meditation, the Self and consciousness development, so that presence may gradually become a stable state of life and accompany choices, relationships, work and everyday experience. One of the central aspects of Part 1 is contact with the Inner Witness, that deeper part of being which observes what is happening with greater calm, clarity and stability. Learning to recognise the Inner Witness means beginning to create a space between what happens and the way we respond, developing a more mature presence and greater inner freedom. The practice of Meditation and Concentration thus becomes a tool for returning to one’s centre, developing inner listening, emotional stability and clarity. The pathway guides the student to understand that meditation also lives beyond the formal moment of practice: it expresses itself in the way we observe a situation, listen to a person, make a decision, move through a difficulty and choose how to act. Part 1 therefore represents the first step towards approaching mindfulness meditation in a serious, progressive and integrated way, learning to cultivate presence as a foundation for personal growth and consciousness development.
